On 26 April 2023, a group of students majoring in International Affairs at the National University of Public Service (Budapest) paid a visit to the Secretariat of the Danube Commission. At the initiative of Prof. Ivan Halász, from the Department of Constitutional Law and Comparative Public Law, NUPS, the study visit at the DC headquarters was aimed to familiarise students with the practical workings of the institutions and organizations with international affairs.
The members of the DC Secretariat gave the students a general presentation of the organization’s activities, structure and responsibilities, as well as a brief historical overview of the international institutions that have had the river Danube as their scope.
The Chief Engineer and the Deputy Director for Legal Affairs and Human Resources presented the current undertakings of the organization, touching upon issues such as the development of navigation, fairway maintenance, emissions reduction, fleet modernization, impact of climate change on Danube navigation, as well as legal aspects of the functioninig of the organization in the current international context.
In the second part of the meeting, the students had the opportunity to hear about participation of the Danube Commission in the projects funded by the European Union, with a focus on Platina3. Also, for a more applied perspective, the visitors were introduced to the interactive map of the Danube – hydrology issues, waste collection points and other topics.
The visitors expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to be welcomed by the Danube Commission to gain an insight into the structure and activities of the Budapest based international organization and to talk directly to the experts of the organization.
